My colleague and friend Chris Chen over at Eastern Scholars introduced me to hydration and mineralization over a year ago as a new found passion that’s changing the way he treats patients.

This is not about drinking enough water; this is about the combination of water PLUS trace minerals. Regardless of how well you eat, most of us are missing the essential minerals we need to feel amazing due to industrialized farming practices in the U.S. over the past 150 years.

Unfortunately, these deficiencies are exacerbated through stress, alcohol, and diets that don’t support us. Common prescription medications can block mineral absorption or even rob our bodies of important nutrients due to the way we metabolize the chemicals. Suzy Cohen wrote an incredible book called Drug Muggers that goes into the details of how this happens. One of the main takeaways being that any of us who use prescriptions need to be constantly remineralizing as part of our daily routine. Chris has also written beautifully on the subject and I encourage you to read his blog posts.

The best way to remineralize is consistently throughout the day with water.

Not all magnesium is created equal and not everyone can tolerate drinking magnesium based mineral solutions. Topical applications are usually a better solution for people who are extremely sick or have delicate GI systems. However, I write this as a resource to be used by patients to whom I’ve prescribed this protocol or for people who are curious and looking for a place to start.

How To Make the Mineral Solution

Solé Rock Salt Instructions

  • Fill the Solé Rock Salt container with distilled or purified water.

  • Wait a minimum of 24 hours before mixing salt water with mineral solutions.

  • As you use the salt water, simply refill the jar as needed with fresh water to use at a later date.

Mason Jar Instructions

  • In the mason jar, mix....

    • 2 parts ReMag

    • 2 parts ReMyte

    • 1 part salt water solution

  • Cover and shake. The mason jar dispenser pump will make life a lot easier and cleaner.

  • Use the dispenser pump to fill the small cosmetic pump jar with the solution as needed.

Oral Mineral Hydration Protocol

  • Ideally, you want to aim to drink 12 - 16 cups of water per day.

  • The easiest way to measure things out is by using the pump jar. Start with 2 - 3 squirts of the mineral solution per cup.

  • If you’re tolerating the solution, build up to 8 squirts per cup.

  • If you get a stomach ache or “the scoots”, back off on the dose to where you can comfortable tolerate it.

Protocol Cheat Sheet V1.0

  • Daily Goal: 16 cups = 1 gallon

  • Initial Phase: Add 2 TSPS solution to 1 gallon

  • Build-up Phase: Add 4 TSPS solution to 1 gallon

This is a great method if you’re at home for the day. You can simply add the prepared mineral solution to a gallon of water in the morning and you don’t have to think about anything other than remembering to drink your water.

Protocol Cheat Sheet V2.0

  • Daily Goal: 16 cups = 7.5 S’well Water Bottles

  • Initial Phase: 4 - 6 squirts solution per bottle

  • Build-up Phase: 16 squirts per bottle

I do this when I’m not at home. My water bottle equals 17 oz and I just throw it in my bag along with the squirt pump. I make a point of trying to drink 1 bottle per hour or so and simply refill it in the office or clinic.
